Yes! There are certain ways to take care of your hair

Most of us grew up knowing one thing:  Wash your hair and rinse it well. And really what else was there to know? Seems simple right? Wrong. There really is a correct way to take care of your hair as well as an incorrect way. I'll go through some of them below. Perhaps you'll change your ways after this tid bit of information.

First of all, your hair is not a garment that needs to be scrubbed. So ladies with long locks, if you are scrubbing your ends in your hands and making a nice mound of knots, Stop!!  The proper way to shampoo hair is to massage the scalp to remove any dirt, oil or dandruff. A nice gentle scrub with finger tips is sufficient. You may even need to do it twice and that's ok. But there is no need to scrub the ends like you are starting a fire. This creates nothing but knots and has no benefit at all. Truth is that the chemicals in the shampoo are designed to remove and take away any dirt and oils. They essentially have a head and a tail. The head grabs it and the tail takes it away.  More than 99% of the hair products and air borne odors are water soluble which means that a stringent shampoo nor a good scrubbing is necessary these days. By using your fingers as a large comb, run your fingers with the lather down through the ends. Voila, clean hair with out additional knots or issues of breakage.

Secondly, you'll likely condition after a shampoo.  Most of us need to and choose to do immediately after the shampoo and in before our other Shower time chores. If you have shampooed as mentioned above, you'll be ready to condition your ends. I like to say, "From the pony tail down".  Why? Because it's likely that your first few inches of hair from your scalp are fairly healthy and haven't been subject to as much damage, if any at all, from any chemical services or sun/chlorine.
After putting the conditioner directly to your ends down, you can then apply the residual conditioner from your hands on to the scalp area if needed.  Wait the duration of time recommended and there you have it. So that's it then? No not at all. On to the next steps.

After you ready to towel dry your hair, you may want to take heed and remember, Your hair is not a sponge nor are you drying off a pooch!  You want to gently pat your hair dry, but again don't rub it like you're trying to put out a fire.  So many do this and now is probably the worst time to do that. Hair can stretch up to 75% or more of it's length at this time. Pulling and twist and yanking is about the worst thing you can do, especially to more fragile hair types. Gently pat your hair dry but leave it in it's state.

Most think, ok, I know what to do now. Grab my brush or comb and get any tangles out, right ? Nope, not yet!  What you do at this step will greatly improve your hairs luster and shine and its manageability.  I highly recommend some type of Moroccan oil, serum or other natural oil to the ends; the pony tail down.  These products restore and protect the hair from damage caused by hot tools and natural elements. If you have not tried this step, I recommend you try 2-4 pumps or drops of oil each time. I have med-fine hair and med-light density and I put 4 pumps of Moroccan oil daily. You will experiment to find your balance.

Ok, now you're good! You grab that comb and start combing.  Seems logical. Yes, intuitive actually. But there is a proper way to comb medium to long hair. Hold the hair as if a pony tail and start combing from the ends up. Yes, from the ends up. If you have a knot, it will come out easier if you start from the bottom. Plus, by holding the hair in a pony tail, securely, you can comb well without much pain at the scalp. This is especially helpful if you are combing someone else's hair.

I bet now with each shampoo and conditioner, towel dry and comb through, you'll notice a difference as well as get a chuckle. I have heard, "I never knew this information" more times than I can tell you. But one thing I know:  It does make a huge difference.

It has been said, When you look good You feel good. And if you think about it long enough, you can agree. Remember when you bought that knock down gorgeous dress? You smirked, twirled, checked yourself out again and happily went up to the counter with your dress ready to pay whatever they say. Why? Because when you look good you feel good.  And forget about it when you find that perfect right shade of lipstick or the color hair you just know is for you. Maybe you graduated a program or made a milestone and think, Man! I really did it. I feel so good in which they may be your inner glow and pride being the looking good part.  What if you adopted a healthy eating plan and exercise routine that gave you confidence to strut your stuff?

Well, let's take this thought process up a notch. You have your favorite dress, your favorite lipstick, your favorite hairstyle; what can you do to capture that feeling? Have a photo shoot of course.
We all see the gorgeous lovelies in our favorite magazines, catalogs, tv shows and movie stars. Maybe you don't want to be those gals but maybe you think, "hey, I'd like to try that". And maybe you just don't know where to start or how it works.  Maybe you think you look great but not quite sure about having pictures made. I'd like to share a little bit about how it works and mostly why I think it's a good idea to try.

In my opinion, no one shall love you more than you can love yourself.  Beauty is merely only skin deep but it does add to how we feel about ourselves. Outside appearance is only one portion of who we are. But we are made up of so many other parts; spiritual, mental, emotional and intellectual.  When you love yourself, you tend to be open to vulnerability and open to embracing yourself; warts and all. After all, not many women are perfect however we are all beautiful. You can always find something about yourself to embrace and cherish.

So, if your hair is rocking, be proud and feel good. If you've got great lips, great eyelashes, toned biceps  feel proud, love it, own it. As a hairstylist, makeup artist, photographer, designer, crafter and other things geared toward empowering women, I encourage you to find your beautiful you. Here's a story to share:
I met a young lady when she was 18. We cut and colored her hair, applied makeup, dressed her up and had a photo shoot. She was beautiful inside and out. About 5-6 years later, we did the same thing.  All dressed up, hairstyled, makeup applied, beautiful garments and accessories to enhance. Opening your own hair salon has many perks!  Opening your own Salon with an attached Photo Studio Is one of them!!

In September 2014, we opened PamPerryStudio, a combination Boutique Style hair salon and photo studio. After much to do with Town Hall, permits, rules, regulations and contractors, we got the doors open. We started planning and got things rolling by June of that year. Lot's of decorating, painting, crying, laughing and pure hard work was in order and by golly, we did it!!

Many of you may know that I had a small studio on the other side of town from where I ran my hair business from. It served it's purpose for me to do my fashion and Hair styling photo shoots. With lots of equipment, jewlery, props, clothes and a makeup station, that little studio produced a lot of really cool work.

But with careful consideration and encouragement from Tim, we set out to find a new space that could have both Hair and Photography services.  It's not an easy thing to decide or take on, but I'm glad we did it. Now I have the space I always wanted. Well, of course I want more space now, but I'll hang on to that idea for a while!! 

So, for 2015 we are marketing, blogging, meeting, greeting, advertising for our photography side of things. After some time and consideration, it's apparent to me that I love shooting High School Seniors!  They are so fashionable and fun!  And it's quite pleasing to see them all excited about the shoot and how much fun they have at them. So, here's to 2015 and I hope to keep you all updated on the happiness that will go on inside PamPerryStudio!!

Raleigh Wedding Hair: Half Up and Half Down

Every bride wants to look her best for her special day. There are many choices that day for hair, makeup and the dress never mind the jewelry and shoes!!  But for hair, it comes down to what suits you, what makes you feel beautiful and what makes you feel like You!  Some gals want to look just like they do every day, just enhanced and some want to look like a Princess in a fairy tale. Either way, if it's your idea, then it's the best idea. You have to look back at the photos and say, Hey, look at me! I was beautiful that day.

One of the biggest deals for the Brides look on her wedding day is:  Hair!  Do you want it all up, curly, smooth, half up and half down, or over to the side?  One Wedding day favorite is:  Half up and Half down.  Why? Because it lends itself to Femininity with softness. Hair Color Change-- Before/After

You know how we girls are.  We get tired of the same lipstick color, the same shoes, the same hair. So we want a change!! And what better change than your hair color! It is amazing what hair color can do for our complexion, our eye color and our self esteem. It can give us a "pep in our step" so to speak. Just ask this gal who came in to my studio for her change.

One of the best things to do is: Decide what kind of change you want and choose pix from magazines or the internet. Find a few because then you're sure that you're going with similar ideas. As we talked through a thorough consultation, I was ready to set on the course to changing her into this rich, reddish brown. Technically speaking, we had to fill her hair then tone the highlights after wards. It left her with shiny bouncy hair.

My Vidal Sasoon Experience

All my life, my hairdresser life that is, I've wanted to go to the Vidal Sassoon Academy. Back in the 90's, it was definitely the thing to do. Every graduate from Beauty Academy knew at that time how famous and important of a man Vidal really was. He was the pioneer of modern hairdressing and precision haircutting. He made my career the exciting and added new twists and turns to the profession I was entering. I knew I had to get there, by hook or by crook!!

After many years of assisting, working behind the chair, taking classes, attending hair shows, studying Vidal from books and tapes (yes, good old VHS) and practicing on countless manniquen heads and anyone who would let me try, I grasped the concept of Precision Haircutting. Thankfully I also worked in Salons where their intention was to make you a precision haircutter by training you on days and times off. Since my brain works with shapes and geometry (that's how I play pool so well!), I began to understand the concepts. I was never a just-do-it gal; no I had to understand it as well. And anyone else like that knows how incredibly crazy we make ourselves trying to dive headlong into learning concepts!

Throughout the years though, you see this way of cutting and that way of cutting, this style of the year, that style is now out....so on and so on. So, you have to maintain your skill, your technique, your ambition and still continue to stay focused on what suits a client and what doesn't. You always have to look at your client as a real person who may or may not be able to wear an asymmetrical bob!  But I have to admit is so much fun when you find someone who would love to wear it! Anyway, you keep up with the times and the trends, but truly haircutting is the same just with tweaks.

I really started to see how the mind of another learner really worked when I started to teach beauty school part time. I started to see that my gift of explaining and bringing concepts to life easily was impacting the folks I was teaching. Because I don't believe enough time is truly spent on learning the concepts to haircutting while in beauty school, I did my very best to spend whatever time I had, to explain in detail and depth. It was while into my 14 month of teaching, I decided it was time to fulfill my dream.

 Now this was nearly 18 years later that I was going to attend the Vidal Sassoon Academy for 5 days of ABC Haircutting. I knew I had to do it though. You know when you get those strong feelings and you just have to? Well, I booked my class in Miami, flight, hotel and off I went. I was not unaware of the what I was in for but I also had no sure idea. I knew we had live models for 4 days and I knew the concepts of "The Sassoon Way" of haircutting. But was I ever surprised with the detailed, yet easy to understand concepts by the Educator Joseph S. He was very gifted in his straight forward manner and his amazing hands while cutting Demo Models for us. I knew that the time was right. I had such an amazing time. My point of going to Vidal was clear and I was satisfied.

I recommend anyone thinking of going to study the concepts of ABC's thoroughly and know them somewhat before you go. Work on clean sections and clean partings, know or be aware of your body position and hand position. Know the difference between graduation and layering, elevation and over direction. After all, this I what Haircutting truly is about. Thank you Vidal Sassoon.

Hair color videos

Since I love to share information and teach classes, it's not surprise that I would find may ways to share!  I have worked for a Hair color company named Keune in the past where I would share information about the company and it's color line. Being in the salon environment was fabulous so it was always good times however it was not as frequent as I would have liked. So my next idea was to get licensed to be a Cosmetology Instructor. Since I have been licensed for 18 years, I was eligible to take the tests without having to go to another school to learn. I passed the tests the first time around!! So without wasting any time, I prepared my resume and began dropping them and emailing them to local beauty schools. After some time, I was hired by a local private school for 2 days per week. It was challenging in the beginning but after a rough patch, it came together. I was a floor instructor who also got to teach advanced classes. That was a lot of fun. Actually, it all was. I really, really enjoyed it. But at some point in April 2013, my legs decided it was too much for me and I resigned. It broke my heart but it was the right decision.

Because I am in the salon 4 days a week, I still have 2 days to find something else to do!! As you may or may not know, I've done amateur photography and even learned about lighting, photoshop programs, etc. I enjoy the challenge to learn something new! So, when I asked my photography friend if she'd be up for making hair color and hair cut videos, she said Yes!!  For the past few weeks, we have gathered models, ideas and set up these video and/or photo shoots! Yes, they are a lot of work but we love the challenge. Since leaving the school May 1, 2013  we have shot and produced 5 amateur videos for Youtube. My channel name is Pamdoeshair, at least it is for now!! Silly name but I like it.

I'm not sure how many we will do but I have a few more ideas rolling around!  It is a lot of fun and I still get to:  Learn something new (video and video editing) and I still get to share information. Because I am that way at heart, it is inevitable that I will find myself back into some form of education. We shall see, wont' we?

I love my airbrush make up system. And gals who have had it done before, love it!! They even seek it out to be done. They won't settle for the old way of applying foundation, blush and highlighter any more!!

Foundations are lightly sprayed over the face. You can have a light application or go heavier for a more photo finished look. But the most important thing to remember is:  Not just one color makes for the most natural look. Faces aren't one solid color. So it's good to know that  your artist is using 1-3 different foundation shades for contouring and highlighting. We have all seen the photo shopped, over air brushed finished models who look like an artificial lifeless doll. Who wants to look like that?  I don't know many, that's for sure. So, although airbrush makeup looks easy, it's important to know that it's not "just that easy". A true artist brings all the variations of tones back to the clients face.

And let's not forget the neck either!! There is nothing worse than the dreaded "floating head" We've all seen it. The gal has gorgeous bronzed face, perfectly contoured cheeks, beautifully done eyes to die for and a completely white neck!! How terrible!  But with the Temptu Airbrush system, I can easily spray down into the neck and into the décolleté area without much worry of it look  dirty into the evening. How do I know this? Because I do it nearly every day, I know!  I also have done it to many, many clients. Sometimes I find that I even have to airbrush foundation over a gals reddened bra strap lines!!  Once I set the foundation with powder, it's nearly transfer proof!!

Air brush blush is amazing!! It goes on so lightly, so easily, so perfectly!!  And if you're the gal who loves to have dewy cheeks, it is for you!!  But what if you don't like it so dewy, that's not a problem!! With just a flick of a brush, it can easily be matted down.

In the end, even make up shy gals can have a beautiful finish to their skin without fear of looking too made up. When you're not used to wearing makeup, a little goes a long way for you. And you should feel good about getting made up. I know I feel good applying air brush makeup!! It's my go-to foundation and blush application without a doubt. And because it's so long lasting and ideal for brides, It's a win-win all around.

Brazilian Blow out

Many women with unruly hair that frizzes in our southern climate are having a Brazilian Blowout Keratin Treatment done. You may have that type of hair and wonder if it's for you. How can you know if you should do it or not. Some of the answers to your questions are below. It may not be for everyone but being informed is truly half the battle.

Does the treatment damage my hair?
The treatment is Not a true chemical alteration in the hair, so it does not do any internal damage. Because the treatment is designed for hair that is already somewhat chemical treated, it can help repair and smooth down the hair, if done properly.

What can I expect from the service and how long does it take?
Every system varies but the Rejuvenol Treatment is moderate strength and is considered a 4-6 month treatment. It is done on freshly shampooed hair that has been dried. After the treatment solution is applied, the hair is dried again. Once dry, the hair goes through the flat iron process. Each section is about 1/8"-1/4" thick and flat ironed approximately 8 times to press the treatment into the hair and seal it in.

When can I wash my hair after the treatment?
It is recommended to wait up to 4 days after. It is also recommended that you do not clip or pin the hair but keep it in its most straightened state.

What can I do to keep the treatment in longer?
If you can go with out shampooing your hair daily, you can prolong the life of the treatment. You can easily shampoo the front and pin the back away. The less you shampoo, the longer the life.
Staying away from any pool water will help. Using the proper recommended Rejuvenol Shampoo and conditioner will keep the treatment looking and feeling fabulous. Using the wrong products can "eat away" at the treatment.

If it's not a chemical straightener, then what is it? 
It is a glaze of sorts, sealing in the hair at it's straightened state. It smooth's the hair and creates a barrier to humidity and frizz. It may not really straighten your hair altogether but it will definitely be frizz free and humidity resistant.

Can I color my hair?
Yes, and its recommended with the product to have your color done first, then your treatment.

My friend says her hair yellowed, why?
Blonde hair can yellow from the extreme high heat of the flat iron. After a test strand, blonde hair may need lower temperatures in flat iron process.

What if I don't really like my hair flat ironed?
It must be flat iron for the process. The high heat drives the product into the hair and creates the bond. after a few days, you can shampoo. At that time, you do not have to flat iron your hair. However, if you like it very flat and shiny, you will need to flat iron for that look.

Airbrush makeup is all the craze in Hollywood, on Photoshoots and On Bride's minds for their big day!

What's the big deal about airbrush? Well, it looks flawless, it goes on quickly, its clean looking and feeling and its quite sanitary. But the Big Deal is it looks Fabulous!! There are a few types of Makeup to use and many manufacturers to make them. Your choices are mostly between water based makeup that looks Matte Finish and is HD ready and Silicone based which is rather water resistant as well as cry/tear resistant which makes it especially appealing to Brides and Bridal parties. The Matte Finish may be geared toward Photowork or Video meanwhile Silicone may be geared toward Brides, Prom Queens, or just a gal for a night out on the town. However neither is exclusive to what its geared towards.

 Both come in Foundation colors that can be used also as contour and highlight shades. Also you have blush and highlight colors that usually can be used as lip stain and eye shadows/eyebrow colors. Silicone based uses Oil based removers and Water based uses simply soap and water. As with any makeup, its good to do a test spot to see if you are allergic. If you have noticed the last few years, highlights are so natural, so sun kist, so Balayage and Ombre!! Colors are melting from darker tops to lightest tips, seamlessly and gorgeously! Ever see a magazine ad with a head of hair you just love whether it be color, cut or style? Tear that thing out and bring it in!! Each client has their own idea of what color, cut or style they wish to have but don't always know the words or jargon we stylist in the salon use. It can be the make or break point in getting what you really want and feeling "good to be you" when you leave. There is so much misinterpretation going on in the salon at the point of consultation.
So, what is the best approach to a consultation?  First of all, ask for one!! A lot of time stylists are trying to stay on time and that results in a stylist who has very little "wiggle" room.  But if you are going to change your style, cut or color inform your stylist or receptionist at the time of booking your appointment. It's best to have at least 10 solid minutes to chat, look at pix and nail the idea down.

Secondly, consider this before you change: What is your maintenance plan or ability to maintain that new style? Will you need an appointment more often? Will you need  a new curling iron/flat iron? New hair styling products? Will you need a blow dry lesson? New brush? Extra 20 minutes each morning? Do you need or have to have a pony tail?  Unnoticeable root regrowth? Can you afford the new service on a regular basis? All of these questions are part of a consultation as well.  Thirdly, can your current stylist interpret what it is your saying/explaining AND execute? That's the key right there. You may have very well brought in all the right pix, explained in detail but your stylist may have other ideas or simply cannot deliver.  If you can, look at his/her portfolio and see if you see anything that resembles your ideas/desires. Most stylists, however do want to please you and give you what you want; and be happy!

So, here are my suggestions:

•  Take out a magazine or two and tear out 3-5 pix of ideas you like.
•  Ask for consultation while making your appointment so they build extra 10-15 into the appointment.
•  Be realistic about what your asking for.  A low maintenance gal doesn't need highlights, low lights, roots touched up and a glaze every 4-5 weeks. That's high expectations. A compromise may need to be made.
• See if your stylist has done what your asking and can execute your ideas. Also, keep your expectations realistic as well. You may not have the hair texture, length or quality that your mag pic has. You  may not have the skill to style or curl as the picture however you could learn.

Also, be open to new ideas from your stylist. If he or she suggests something new, different, fresh or modern, inquire more. A little alteration is good from time to time.

Beauty School Instructor

Years ago, about how many I can't recall exactly, I decided one of my goals was to be a beauty school instructor. Of course, I did not set the goal specifically but I did set it. So about 3 years ago I began the process of getting my instructor's license.  But along the way, I have accomplished other goals or at least accomplished other interests of which a few are:  Learning how to set up photography lighting and take some what professional pictures of my Hair and Make up Creations, Floral design, facilitated Bible teaches/groups, Created an amazing garden that was elected to be on the garden tour in my town, I took Salsa dancing lessons,  learned Photoshop to edit my pictures, Video and Video editing for YouTube videos, Upholstery, Window Treatment Design and Sewing, faux painting, Regional Artisan Training for Keune Hair Cosmetics, How to Have a Difficult conversation training, Assertiveness Training, Hair Extensions, Temporary Eyelashes, Airbrush make up, Fantasy makeup, nail extensions, Creative Hair coloring, Vidal Sassoon Hair cutting training, learning Arabic language (never did fully complete that, still working on it)

Still going for my dreams/goals at 41

Wow! so all that has happened, and then some, since 1994 but none of those were a set and certain goal that I worked on achieving. Now, at age 40, I have discovered a few more goals, specifically 2 that I'd like to accomplish by age 45 and age 50. I'm going to start planning out the goal for when I'm 45. I can tell you little about it, but what's certain is it is still in the field of Hair and Make up.

What goals and dreams do you have? Start dreaming now and get a plan put together for it. You can't just wish on something and hope it happens. It would be a great idea to write them down and sit and think. Think about what it would take to get to your goal, ask questions of others who have done what you want to do. Be proactive to get to your dream; it will not fall in your lap.
 Even if it does, you'll
have to work toward keeping your dream or enhancing it.

temporary eye lash extensions

Sometimes, don't you just wish you had long, luxurious eyelashes?  There are a few options these days for extending them, getting them to grow or thickening what you already have.  I want to tell you about something non-committal but definitely worth checking out if you occasionally wish you had longer lashes. However, if you were wanting them more permanent, that's an option too. This is NOT what you have been hearing about these days. This is NOT the little hairs individually placed on the lash line and in between each eye lash. Although a great service, it is not for everyone as cost and maintenance is high; it's truly a luxury service. The Service I am referring to is Individual Eyelash clusters applied at the base of your own eye, on top of lashes, not in between. The glue used is a temporary-semi permanent style. With care, eyelashes can stay on for up to 2 weeks. Or if you prefer, one evening.  Removal is real easy. Just use an oil based eye make up remover. If you want to keep them longer, use care to remove your eye make up but do not remove the eye lashes.

It is quite possible to NOT need any mascara with a full set applied. However, if you have lighter lashes, you may see a noticeable difference in color from your lashes to the ones applied.
These are also great for just filling in between your own lashes. Perhaps you don't need a full set, double set or even a partial. Perhaps you like just a few added in to make your own look a little fuller. If you have spaces in between your lashes that you want filled in, this is for you.

As a professional, application is quick and easy; in and out of my chair in less than 15 minutes. I can do a full line or partial. I can give you natural looking or "wow, look at her eyelashes!".  But keep in mind, it is virtually undetectable. Your gal pals will notice but you won't look like you have one of those awful strip lashes applied. They always seem to loosen on one end, don't they? There's no confidence or security in those strip lashes.


 Someone needs to come up with something better. Oh! They did! Individual Eyelash Clusters!

This is also something you can definitely do on your own. They are sold at almost any beauty type of retail store. The glue is sold nearby. However, it does take practice to do your own. So, don't try the evening you need to; practice a few times a few days in advance.

You Tube!

I guess I jumped on the band wagon of doing You Tube Tutorials. On Halloween Day, My friend Kristen and I posted our first one. I did a Halloween Makeup look meanwhile she set up the camera, organized the settings for it and also she pretty much walked me through the editing. It came out better than I expected!
To keep it looking as porfessional as I can, I purchased two "Constant lights" that use flourescent bulbs. I did a practice run with another video that I am currently working on and I used the lights. I am currently learning an editing program called Sony Vegas Movie Studio 11.  There are learning curves to anything you learn, so I am going through the program step-by-step. And Thank the Lord for You Tube because that's also where I am learning tips and tricks for this program. I don't want to learn anything elaborate, I just want to produce a nice video that is clear and understandable.
For my videos, I've decided that it is best if I do "voice over" so that it is possible to shorten videos; some videos are just not necessary to be as long as originally taped, I believe.,
So, I am off to absorb myself into something new because that's How I Roll...

Fashion Make Up and Hair Cary

Doing beauty makeup is so much fun. Taking a gal who is going to a special affair, be it prom, wedding or gala, and transformer her into a "Belle" is so exciting and gratifying.  But doing fashion make up and hair is exceptionally gratifying. Why? Because quite frankly you just don't get to do it every time.  Recently I got to cover over the models eyebrows  and add blue polka dot eyelashes to that area.  Not only that, the hairstyle was fabulous. I curled the hair with a 1/4" curling iron, teased and add "padding" to help the hairstyle form.  What a wonderful time working on this look.
